2 Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care Residencies in Bern, Switzerland

The Small Animal Clinic of the Vetsuisse Faculty, University of Bern, Switzerland is offering a 3-year Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care residency. This training program is aimed at qualifying candidates for the ACVECC or ECVECC certifying examination. Starting date is January 1 st or July 1st, 2019. The program is supported by two board certified emergency and critical care diplomats.

The small animal clinic has sections of internal medicine (including a hemodialysis unit), surgery and neurology as independent units and as well different smaller clinical sections (ophthalmology, dermatology, cardiology) and two large sections of anesthesiology and diagnostic imaging supporting the clinical units. The ER/ICU unit is an approved ACVECC and ECVECC residency program center. The unit includes a dedicated trauma/emergency receiving area, a fully equipped ICU and a dedicated 24h lab. Clinical duties require flexible working hours that include daytime, evening, night and weekend responsibilities to fulfil the requirements of the ECVECC training programme. The resident is also expected to perform successful rotations in internal medicine, surgery and other non-ECC specialties, to meet the residency training requirements. Residents manage their cases under direct and indirect supervision of an ACVECC/ECVECC Diplomate. They participate in technical staff- and rotating veterinary student training. Residents are required to participate in daily cage side rounds, weekly hospital rounds, journal club and resident seminars. Within the 3 years, residents should complete a publication that satisfies the ACVECC/ECVECC credentials requirements.

Prerequisites to be considered for the residency program include a licence to practice in a European country, completion of a small animal rotating internship or equivalent and mentored practice experience of at least two years.

Applicants should have strong communication and interpersonal skills, a positive and energetic attitude, compassion and enthusiasm for helping clients and patients alike. In addition, good knowledge of German, French and English languages is necessary; although 60% of our clients and referring veterinarians are francophone, the main language in use in Bern is German.

The complete residency encompasses 3-years. The applicant will be offered a full time position for the first year that will be extended in case of satisfactory performance and fulfilments of the ACVECC/ECVECC training program requirements. The gross monthly salary ranges from CHF4.000 to CHF4.480 (pre-tax).

Bern is the capitol of Switzerland and located in the heart of the country with easy access to the Swiss Alps. The Vetsuisse Faculty of Bern is centrally located and comprised of international faculty and staff from various European and other countries.
